Stolen from moonrise

4 / 50 books. 8% done!
Currently Reading: In the Hand of the Goddess by: Tamora Pierce

★★★★★ - Fantastic novel. Very highly recommended.
★★★★☆ - Very good novel. Held my interest.
★★★☆☆ - A bad story that held my interest or a good story that didn't hold my interest.
★★☆☆☆ - Didn't hold my interest or was poorly written.
★☆☆☆☆ - Why did I even waste my time? Biggest waste of publishing money ever!

1. Voluntary Madness by Norah Vincent
Began: 12.29.2009
Finished: 01.10.2010
Rating: ★★★☆☆
Thoughts: Overall a good read, and a good glimpse at what it's like inside some of the psychiatric hospitals in the US. However, the author tended to sound very high and mighty about her own illness. She suffers from depression but is quick to point out that she's not as *annoyingly* depressed as everyone else. Her stance on psychiatric drugs is sort of shoved down your throat over and over again. We're always reminded how awful these meds are, while also blaming the turnaround rate on the lack of availability of these drugs to the mentally ill that are homeless. The sampling of hospitals is small, but she does go to hospitals on both end of the spectrum. In the end you're left wondering whether universal healthcare would help at all, since the hospitals taking care of those on medicare and medicaid seem to be such awful places.

2. Survivors by Terry Nation
Began: 01.06.2010
Finished: 01.11.2010
Rating: ★★★☆☆
Thoughts: I'm a bit bias since I watched the show before reading the book. The characters were very stereotypical, and not very diverse. The main character starts out as a pampered upper-middle class housewife, who quickly becomes a leader of her own commune. Though she believes her son is still alive, she doesn't spend a lot of time looking for, or even thinking about him. It was a quick read, but it had a hard time keeping my interest. The show fleshes out the characters and gives a bit more background on the plague that wipes out most of the planet.

3. Am I Bovvered? The Catherine Tate Show Scripts by Catherine Tate
Began: 01.09.2010
Finished: 01.10.2010
Rating: ★★★★☆
Thoughts: Just a collection of scripts from the Catherine Tate show. None of the Children in Need sketches are included, but I believe all the others are there. If you're a big fan of the show it's a neat thing to own, and you can find it pretty cheap on amazon marketplace (I got it for $4 including shipping).

4. Alanna: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce
Began: 01.25.2010
Finished: 01.25.2010
Rating: ★★★★★
Thoughts: ADORED this book! toasterssaymoo recommended it ages ago but I never got around to reading it. It's a quick young-adult read with the typical plucky female heroine. But I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN. I ended up reading it straight through, and immediately picked up the second book after. I can't wait to read the rest of the series. I can't believe I haven't heard of Tamora Pierce before!

Thief! Haha.. I stole the idea from like 30 people myself. XD

Good luck with your reading!!I figured out I have to read 4.5 books a month to make it happen.. I think Im going to read tiny easy books through February since its a teeny month.

XD It's a great challenge!

Hmm 4.5 a month. I might be able to pull that off. I just need to stop procrastinating. Even though I ENJOY reading I'll go on my iphone and get sucked in for hours and waste time. I might copy you with the easy reads through February ;-)

I tend to read 4 books at a time, this will be a good way to see if it speeds up or slows down my reading!

How do you keep it straight with four at once? I have trouble juggling manga and tv shows much less books... I have to read them one at a time and normally once I begin a series, I have to finish it.

lol I'm very ADD when it comes to reading... er anything. I tend to genre shift a lot. Like, I'll be in the mood for non-fiction books about the history of mental hospitals or something, then suddenly I'll sort of snap out of that and want to read epic fiction fantasy like Tolkien - so I stop reading the first and go to the second, and sort of switch back and forth XD

It's almost always a fiction and non-fiction, and they're usually VERY different, so it's easier to keep straight.

lol that sounds really confusing XD sorry!

Reading is the only thing that calms my ADHD.. so I guess thats why its harder for me to grasp. The only way grandma used to be able to get me to shutup and sit still was to hand me a good bok. And then she couldnt get me to put it down for food, sleep, a fire, or whatever. Most the time Papa would confiscate it and not return it till whatever I had to do was done.

That's so cute!! :-P I don't know if my brother and I were ever THAT involved, but reading was always really important in our family. My mom read us kids books, but she'd also read us Lord of the Rings and the Chronicles of Narnia when we went to bed, or whatever she was reading at the time. My sister never really got into reading though, the only reason she's reading now is because they have to "pleasure read" at school every day for 20 minutes.

Oh, and on your ticker, you should change the "words" to "books" or the like yeah?
Feb. 1st, 2010 10:54 pm (UTC)
LOL!! Thanks for pointing that out :-P I remember thinking "don't forget to change that" as I was making it, but I must have forgotten in the end. Thanks!

It was the first thing I changed. I kept forgetting to change the percent though, so under it, it would have the correct percent, but the color wasnt filling it because I wasnt changing it's percent ^_^;; I just realized it when I finished my last book. I hadnt changed itsince the first one was finished when I set the entry up V_V;;

aaw! lol. On my old layout my icon covered up half the bar... and I couldn't move it to the right side, though I guess that would have looked weird anyway :-P

I spent a half hour messing with my coding to change my boxquotes so that they indent inwards just so my icon wouldnt cover up half the bar, because if you center it, it centers the colored in portion too.
